Cruz was found dead in the rear parking lot of Smuggler's Inn, a nightclub located near Interstate 435 and Front Street. The incident occurred early Sunday morning, following a verbal altercation inside the club that escalated into a fatal confrontation outside. According to witnesses, the conflict culminated in Cruz being shot in the head with a Highpoint 9-mm handgun.
