Hispanic male Ludy Cruz, 41, became the subject of a homicide investigation following a violent incident in Kansas City, Missouri, on May 25, 2014. The fatal encounter took place in the early morning hours at the Smuggler's Inn, a nightclub and hotel located near Interstate 435 and Front Street. Police officers were dispatched to the scene around 2:30 a.m. after receiving reports of a shooting in the rear parking lot.
Upon their arrival, first responders discovered Cruz suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Despite the arrival of emergency personnel, he had succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses reported that the violence stemmed from a verbal altercation that began inside the nightclub earlier that night. The dispute reportedly continued for approximately ten minutes before escalating into a physical fight. Although bystanders initially broke up the scuffle, the situation reignited outside in the parking lot. It was there that the suspect approached Cruz and fired a single shot before fleeing into a nearby wooded area. Investigators later recovered a shell casing at the scene which matched a 9mm handgun found during a subsequent search of the suspect's residence.
Authorities quickly identified the primary suspect as Luis Miguel Murillo-Rosales, a 25-year-old resident of Kansas City, Kansas. He was taken into custody and prosecutors charged him with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. During the investigation, it was revealed that after the shooting, Murillo-Rosales had called a friend for a ride and returned to his home. In addition to the state charges, he faced federal indictment for being an illegal alien in possession of a firearm. The legal proceedings moved forward with prosecutors alleging the act was deliberate, and reports indicate the judicial process resulted in a conviction for the first-degree murder charge. Cruz's body was later returned to Honduras for burial.
