On December 26, 2017, 55-year-old female Rosemarie Harmon was fatally shot in the street near the intersection of 6th Street and Spruce Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri. The incident unfolded when Harmon approached a dark-colored, four-door vehicle that had pulled up to the location. After a brief interaction, she ran away and attempted to take cover behind a couch on the sidewalk. The vehicle initially sped off but returned approximately one minute later.
A male suspect exited the car and opened fire, striking Harmon’s friend who had come to check on her. The gunman then stood over Harmon and fired multiple shots, killing her at the scene. The entire sequence of events was captured on surveillance video.
Investigators retrieved shell casings from the scene, which were later matched by the Kansas City crime laboratory to a 9mm handgun. This weapon was recovered by police in neighboring Kansas City, Kansas, underneath the driver’s seat of a vehicle driven by Antoine R. Fielder. Fielder had been arrested on December 30, 2017, following an armed carjacking and robbery that occurred in Wyandotte County just days prior to Harmon's murder. Witnesses further implicated Fielder, alleging that he had bragged about the killings and even showed them news footage of the crime scene, referring to the victim as 'Rosie.'
Antoine Fielder was subsequently charged in Jackson County, Missouri, with first-degree murder, first-degree assault, and two counts of armed criminal action in connection with Harmon’s death and the wounding of her friend. At the time of Harmon's murder, Fielder had recently been released from custody after two mistrials resulted in hung juries regarding the 2015 killing of another woman, Kelsey Ewonus, in Overland Park. Prosecutors in that earlier case had dismissed the charges after the second deadlock, allowing Fielder to be free in late 2017 when Harmon was killed.
While in custody for the charges related to Harmon and the separate carjacking, Fielder was involved in another high-profile violent incident. In June 2018, while being transported for a court hearing in Wyandotte County, he overpowered two sheriff's deputies, Theresa King and Patrick Rohrer, taking one of their service weapons and fatally shooting both officers. Fielder was shot during the struggle but survived. In December 2024, Fielder pleaded guilty to two counts of capital murder for the deaths of the deputies to avoid the death penalty, receiving two life sentences without the possibility of parole. Following this sentencing, prosecutors in Jackson County indicated plans to pursue extradition so that Fielder could finally face trial for the pending charges in the death of Rosemarie Harmon.
