In the early morning hours of October 5, 2018, the life of 17-year-old Makayla Brooks was tragically cut short in what authorities have described as a senseless act of violence. The female teenager was asleep on the couch in the front living room of a residence in the 5500 block of Blue Ridge Boulevard in Raytown, Missouri, a suburb of Kansas City, when she was fatally shot.
Several other people were present in the home at the time of the shooting, but no one else was physically harmed.
The investigation into Makayla's death led authorities to two other local teenagers, 19-year-old Logan B.L. England and 17-year-old Kaci Cox. It was revealed that Cox had driven England to the victim's residence. According to statements Cox later gave to law enforcement, she showed England where Makayla lived. England then allegedly entered the home through an unlocked back door and shot Makayla four times as she slept on the couch. After the shooting, Cox stated she heard two, three, or four gunshots before England returned to the vehicle.
The motive for this violent act, as told to witnesses by England, was that he believed Makayla had 'snitched' on a friend of his. England reportedly warned Cox not to tell anyone about the incident. Both Logan B.L. England and Kaci Cox were subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with Makayla Brooks' death. At the time of their charging in Makayla's murder, both England and Cox were already in custody, having been previously charged in a separate fatal shooting that occurred in March of the same year outside a Raytown pool hall.
