On the afternoon of August 29, 2014, a violent tragedy unfolded in the 4400 block of Ferdinand Avenue in St. Louis, Missouri, claiming the life of 41-year-old Darnell Martin. Shortly before 5:30 p.m., Martin was outside with two friends, a 20-year-old man and a 21-year-old man, attending to a flat tire on a vehicle. As the group worked on the repair, a dark-colored Lincoln LS drove past them.
The occupants of the moving vehicle suddenly opened fire on the men, unleashing a hail of bullets in a drive-by shooting ambush.
Darnell Martin sustained multiple gunshot wounds during the attack, suffering injuries to his flank, abdomen, back, and chin. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and transported him to a local hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. One of his companions, the 20-year-old man, suffered a graze wound to his chest and was treated at the scene, while the third man escaped physical injury. The gunman fled the area immediately following the shooting, leaving investigators to canvas the neighborhood for leads.
In October 2014, authorities announced charges against 22-year-old Travon Johnson in connection with Martin's death. Johnson was charged with first-degree murder, first-degree assault, and two counts of armed criminal action. Police alleged that Johnson was the individual responsible for the fatal drive-by. Additionally, Johnson and an associate, 19-year-old Trevon Jackson, were implicated in a separate shooting incident that occurred a month later in September, targeting other individuals in a similar manner.
The case against Travon Johnson eventually went to trial, covering multiple violent incidents attributed to him during that period. While Johnson was convicted and sentenced to 90 years in prison for the September shooting involving different victims, the jury returned a verdict of not guilty regarding the charges related to Darnell Martin. Johnson was acquitted of the murder, armed criminal action, and assault charges specifically tied to the August 29 incident that ended Martin's life.
