In the late hours of March 4, 2023, a night that began with entertainment would end in tragedy for 31-year-old Douglas Sanders, a male resident of Florissant, Missouri. After spending time with four other individuals at a strip club in Illinois, the group was making their way back into Missouri across the McKinley Bridge. It was on this bridge that their journey was violently interrupted.
A dispute that is said to have originated at Roxy's nightclub in the Metro East area escalated to a terrifying chase.
As their vehicle crossed the bridge, another car pursued them, and gunfire erupted. Sanders, who was a passenger in the back seat, was struck in the back of the head. The shooting didn't only claim one victim; another man in the car, a 37-year-old, was also hit by the gunfire. He was critically injured in the attack and faced a long recovery in the hospital for several weeks. Following the shooting, Sanders was rushed to a hospital, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting was handed over to St. Louis detectives. Their work led to the identification of a suspect in the fatal shooting. Brandon Lawrence Allen, a 34-year-old from St. Louis, was arrested and subsequently charged by St. Louis prosecutors. The charges brought against Allen were severe, including first-degree murder for the death of Douglas Sanders, first-degree assault for the critical injuries sustained by the second victim, and two counts of armed criminal action.
