In the late hours of a Wednesday evening in Independence, Missouri, the life of 26-year-old Bobby L. Mullins II was brought to a violent and abrupt end. On November 12, 2014, at approximately 10 p.m., Mullins was fatally shot in the head in the parking lot of a Shell gas station located near 40 Highway and Blue Ridge Cutoff. The male victim was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving a community in shock and a family to grapple with a sudden and senseless loss.
The investigation into the
shooting quickly pointed to 37-year-old Shawn M. Hughes of Independence as the primary suspect. According to court documents and surveillance footage from the gas station, the events leading up to the fatal encounter began when Hughes arrived in a dark-colored truck with a female companion. After the two entered the store to make a purchase, Mullins arrived in a white truck and also went inside. It was at this point that Hughes was seen approaching Mullins' vehicle, punching the driver's side window, and searching through the truck. When Mullins exited the store, a brief but fatal confrontation ensued. Hughes brandished a gun and shot Mullins before fleeing the scene with a red backpack he had taken from the victim's vehicle.
In the aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement located and arrested Hughes. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. During legal proceedings, Hughes claimed ignorance of the charges and leveled accusations of corruption against the Independence police department. The woman who had been with Hughes at the time of the incident was also taken into custody but was later released without any charges being filed against her. She provided investigators with a potential motive, stating that Hughes and Mullins were acquainted and that Hughes believed Mullins had stolen something from him. She also revealed that upon seeing Mullins at the gas station, Hughes had expressed an intent to confront him. The case against Hughes then proceeded through the judicial system.
