In the winter of 2015, in north St. Louis County, the life of a three-year-old boy named Xavier Zae Robinson was tragically cut short. On the morning of December 21st, a single gunshot echoed through his family's home on Emerald Creek Drive. The shot, fired from a handgun, struck the young boy in the chest. He was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
The person who fired the fatal shot was not a stranger, but a fifteen-year-old friend of Xavier's older brother.
The events leading up to the tragedy revealed a grim picture of negligence. According to authorities, Xavier's parents, Shawmane Robinson and Semaj Porter, had been aware that their older son and his friend were playing with the handgun the night before the incident. Despite this knowledge, they failed to intervene, neither taking the weapon away nor ensuring it was unloaded. This parental oversight set the stage for the devastating outcome that would unfold the following day.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the fifteen-year-old shooter fled the scene. However, his flight was short-lived, as he turned himself in to the Florissant Police Department later that same afternoon. The legal process that followed saw him charged with manslaughter. The case was prosecuted in adult court, and he was ultimately placed under house arrest. Xavier's parents also faced legal consequences for their role in the tragedy. Both were charged with felony child endangerment. Shawmane Robinson was sentenced to ten months in jail, while Semaj Porter received five years of probation.
The story took another dark turn years later, entwined with an act of retribution. In October 2017, the teenager who had accidentally shot Xavier, Kameron Harvey, was himself killed. He was shot while riding his bike in Bellefontaine Neighbors. The subsequent police investigation led to the arrest of two seventeen-year-olds in connection with Harvey's death. One of the individuals taken into custody was a relative of the young boy whose life had been lost nearly two years prior, linking the two deaths in a tragic cycle of violence.
