On January 30, 2016, a tragic series of events unfolded in Kansas City, Missouri, involving 52-year-old White male Thomas E. Kuzila Jr. Known to his friends and family as 'Swede,' Kuzila was a dedicated union pipefitter with Local #533 for 25 years, a former 2nd Lieutenant in the National Guard, and a graduate of the University of Central Missouri.
He had been navigating the area near the intersection of Independence Boulevard and Prospect Avenue when he encountered a dangerous situation that would ultimately cost him his life.
Investigators later determined that Kuzila was approached by individuals who lured or forced him into an alleyway within the Historic Northeast neighborhood of Pendleton Heights. Once in the alley off the 100 block of Brooklyn Avenue, the encounter turned fatal. Kuzila sustained a gunshot wound to the head, ending his life in the early morning hours. Following the shooting, the perpetrator stole Kuzila's vehicle, a late-model Ford F-250 Harley Davidson edition pickup truck, leaving the victim's body behind in the alley where police later discovered him.
Detectives launched an investigation into the homicide, eventually recovering the stolen truck and identifying a suspect. Police focused their efforts on Lorenzo D. Washington, a man in his late 20s who had previously spent time in the Missouri prison system for theft. Evidence gathered during the inquiry implicated Washington in the crime, revealing that he had been responsible for the fatal shooting and the subsequent theft of the vehicle.
In February 2016, authorities charged Lorenzo Washington with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. As the legal proceedings advanced, the charges were adjusted. In January 2017, nearly a year after the murder, Washington appeared in court and entered a guilty plea to reduced charges of second-degree murder and armed criminal action. A Jackson County judge sentenced him to 28 years in prison for the murder charge and three years for the armed criminal action, ordering the sentences to run concurrently.
