In March of 2016, the life of 50-year-old Stahl Lee Sturgeon of Doniphan, Missouri, was tragically cut short in a fatal shooting in Poplar Bluff. The man responsible, Joseph Wade Wisdom of Poplar Bluff, would later claim that 'bad dope' was to blame for his violent actions.
The unfortunate encounter began when Sturgeon offered a ride to Wisdom, who was on the side of Highway 160. At some point during the drive, Wisdom began to act erratically, prompting Sturgeon to draw a gun.
A struggle over the weapon ensued, resulting in Sturgeon being shot in the neck and chest.
Following his arrest, Wisdom informed authorities that he had been using methamphetamine and had not slept recently, attributing his behavior to having been given 'some 'bad dope.'' He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder, assault, and unlawful use of a weapon in connection with Sturgeon's death.
Ultimately, Joseph Wade Wisdom pleaded guilty to the charges. In December 2017, he was sentenced to nearly 60 years in prison for his role in the death of Stahl Lee Sturgeon.
