On October 30, 2016, in Independence, Missouri, a fatal shooting claimed the life of Jacobsen Laumoli, a 27-year-old American Samoan male. Police officers were dispatched to a residence in the 20100 block of East 12th Terrace South around 1:55 a.m. following reports of shots fired. Upon arrival, first responders discovered Laumoli’s body outside the home, where he had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the back.
The incident occurred in a residential neighborhood where two separate Halloween parties were taking place nearby.
Witnesses and investigators determined that a physical altercation had broken out between guests attending the celebrations. During the conflict, a suspect identified as Travon M. Williams, who was 19 years old at the time, allegedly seized a firearm belonging to the homeowner. Williams reportedly fired the weapon at the front door of the residence during the fight. Although the shots were fired toward the house, one of the bullets struck Laumoli, resulting in his death. Williams, known to some witnesses by the nickname 'Trace,' was subsequently identified by authorities as the primary person of interest in the homicide investigation.
Law enforcement officials arrested Travon M. Williams, and the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office initially charged him with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in November 2016. Prosecutors requested a $300,000 bond at the time of the charges. The legal proceedings continued for several years, eventually resulting in a conviction. In 2019, Williams was convicted of first-degree involuntary manslaughter and armed criminal action in connection with Laumoli's death.
Following his conviction for the 2016 killing, Williams became the subject of further legal scrutiny. In January 2021, while seemingly out of custody, he was charged with first-degree murder, kidnapping, and additional weapons offenses related to the shooting death of a 60-year-old woman in Kansas City. Court records cited in the 2021 investigation referenced his prior 2019 conviction for the involuntary manslaughter of Laumoli as part of his criminal history.
