On the evening of January 12, 2017, a violent disturbance erupted at The Trails at the Ridge apartment complex in Kansas City, Missouri. Around 9:30 p.m., neighbors in the 8600 block of East 62nd Street reported hearing the sound of multiple gunshots, describing the noise as a rapid succession of 'pops' that sounded deceptively distant yet distinct. Officers from the Kansas City Police Department responded to the scene just before 10:00 p.m.
to investigate the third-floor apartment where the gunfire had originated. Upon entering the residence, they discovered a chaotic and tragic scene with five individuals having been shot during what appeared to be a home invasion.
Inside the apartment, authorities found three deceased victims who had sustained fatal gunshot wounds. Among them was 29-year-old male Darrell E. Thomas, along with 28-year-old Victoria Brown and 20-year-old Ali R. Brown. Detectives noted that there were no signs of forced entry into the unit, leading investigators to look into how the perpetrators gained access. Reports surfaced suggesting that the three male suspects had been let into the apartment before the shooting commenced. The violence claimed the lives of Thomas and Victoria Brown at the scene, while Ali Brown was transported to a local hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.
The attack left two other victims critically injured but alive. One of the survivors was Ali Brown’s 2-year-old son, who was shot five times during the incident. Despite the severity of his wounds, including a broken arm, the toddler survived and was described by family members as a 'miracle baby' during his recovery. A 22-year-old female was also found alive at the scene suffering from a gunshot wound to the face; she was hospitalized and survived the assault. The brutal nature of the crime, which involved shooting a toddler, deeply shook the community and the families involved, with Ali Brown’s father—a former mayor of St. Peters, Missouri—publicly mourning the loss.
Following the triple homicide, police released descriptions of three suspects believed to be responsible. Witness accounts described three Black males fleeing the scene. One suspect was described as having a light complexion and shoulder-length dreadlocks, while a second was reported to be wearing a light gray hooded sweatshirt. The third suspect was not described in detail. The men were seen leaving in a black or blue four-door vehicle. Despite the release of these details and pleas for information from the families, public records indicate that the case remained under investigation for years without immediate arrests. As of the last available reports, no specific individuals had been charged or convicted for the murders of Darrell E. Thomas and the two women, leaving the case as an unsolved tragedy in the Kansas City area.
