In the winter of 2017, a young mother's hope for a new beginning was tragically cut short in an act of brutal violence. Ali Renee Brown, a 20-year-old female, had moved to Kansas City, Missouri, from her hometown of St. Peters, seeking a fresh start for herself and her young son. She settled into a third-floor apartment, but on the night of January 12th, her home became a scene of horror.
In what investigators believe was an armed invasion, gunfire erupted inside her apartment located in the 8600 block of East 62nd Street.
When police responded to calls of shots fired, they discovered a devastating scene with five people having been shot. Two individuals, 29-year-old Darrell E. Thomas and 28-year-old Victoria Brown, were found deceased inside the apartment. Ali Brown was critically injured and transported to a hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries. Miraculously, there were two survivors: another adult woman and Ali's 2-year-old son, Karson, who endured being shot five times. The bullets broke the young boy's arm, but he survived the horrific attack.
The triple homicide left a community in shock and a family desperate for answers. Friends and family of Ali Brown do not believe the killings were related to drugs or gang activity, though the motive remains unclear to the public. There has been some speculation that Darrell E. Thomas, who had a criminal history, may have been the intended target of the assailants. Ali was remembered as a happy and outgoing young woman who had been a cheerleader in high school and was a devoted mother.
In the wake of the killings, police began searching for three male suspects who were believed to have fled the scene in a dark-colored four-door vehicle. Descriptions of the suspects were limited; one was described as a light-skinned Black man with shoulder-length dreadlocks, the second as a Black male in a light gray hoodie, and the third was described only as a Black male. Despite the ongoing investigation and pleas from the victims' families for information, the case remains unsolved, and no arrests have been made. The community continues to hope that someone will come forward with the information needed to bring justice for Ali, Victoria, Darrell, and the young child who survived the massacre.
