On the evening of Saturday, February 4, 2017, the body of 23-year-old Black female Christina L. Cunningham was discovered under harrowing circumstances along a highway in Kansas City, Missouri. Known affectionately as 'Chrissy' to her friends and family, Cunningham had earlier told her mother that she planned to meet a friend north of the river to dye her hair.
When she failed to show up or return phone calls, her parents, Kevin and Serese Brown, initially did not worry, assuming she had simply gotten busy or distracted. However, the situation turned tragic when homicide detectives arrived at the family's home the following day to deliver the devastating news of her discovery.
Around 10:30 p.m. that Saturday night, a Missouri Highway Patrol trooper was patrolling Interstate 29 near Northwest 56th Street in Platte County when he noticed a vehicle pulled over on the south entrance ramp. Believing it to be a stranded motorist, the trooper stopped to offer assistance but found the car abandoned. Upon inspecting the surrounding area, he discovered Cunningham lying in a nearby ditch, suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds. She was immediately transported to a local hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead.
Investigators determined that Cunningham had likely been shot while inside the vehicle before being left on the roadside. Detectives theorized that the shooter was a passenger in the car with her at the time of the incident. Despite the discovery of the car and the body, the specific events leading up to the shooting remained unclear, including whether she had been pushed from the vehicle or had crawled out seeking help. Cunningham, a 2011 graduate of Washington High School who had served as a commander in her school's ROTC program, was described by her father as a hardworking young woman who was trying to find her path in life while working at a hotel near the Kansas Speedway.
