The investigation into the shooting quickly led authorities to a suspect. De-Von D. Johnson, then 20 years old, was taken into custody in St. Louis County the day after the shooting. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office had received information that Johnson was involved in the death of Bryan Scholz. During questioning, Johnson admitted to his involvement in the shooting. He informed investigators that he had arranged to purchase a small amount of marijuana from Scholz.
According to the investigation, Johnson traveled from St. Louis to Scholz's home in House Springs with the intention of robbing him. An altercation occurred between the two young men, which tragically escalated. Johnson brandished a firearm and shot Scholz. Following his confession, De-Von D. Johnson was charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action, and a warrant was issued for his arrest with no bond allowed.
In the subsequent legal proceedings, De-Von D. Johnson was found guilty of the charges brought against him. For the first-degree murder of Bryan Scholz, he was sentenced to life in prison. This sentence ensures that he will be incarcerated for his role in the violent death of the teenager from House Springs.
