In a tragic and unforeseen turn of events, a 34-year-old man, Charles Petty, lost his life in his own home. He was a Black / African American male. On the morning of April 19, 2017, in St. Louis, Missouri, Petty was in his basement apartment with his girlfriend when a single gunshot suddenly pierced through the wall from the adjacent unit. The bullet struck Petty in the head, critically injuring him.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency medical treatment.
Despite the efforts of medical professionals, Petty succumbed to his severe injuries and passed away the following day, on April 20, 2017. The senseless act left his loved ones and the community in shock. His girlfriend, who was present at the time of the incident, was physically unharmed but undoubtedly traumatized by the experience. The randomness of the violence that claimed Petty's life highlighted the devastating consequences of stray bullets in residential areas.
The subsequent police investigation swiftly identified a suspect. Neighbors directed law enforcement to the adjoining apartment from where the fatal shot was believed to have originated. There, they found 43-year-old Kevin Thomas. Following an inquiry into the circumstances of the shooting, Thomas was taken into custody. It was determined that he had discharged the firearm in his apartment, leading to the bullet penetrating the shared wall and striking Petty.
Kevin Thomas was subsequently charged with first-degree involuntary manslaughter, armed criminal action, and unlawful possession of a firearm. A judge set his bond at $150,000, cash-only. The charges reflected the belief that while the act may not have been premeditated, it was the result of extreme recklessness and a disregard for the safety of others. The case proceeded through the legal system, leaving a family to mourn the sudden and tragic loss of Charles Petty.
