On the night of August 17, 2017, a violent confrontation unfolded in Independence, Missouri, resulting in the untimely death of 33-year-old Christopher L. King. Officers from the Independence Police Department were dispatched to a residence in the 1500 block of South Pearl Street just before 11:00 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, first responders discovered the male victim outside the home, suffering from a single gunshot wound to the chest.
Despite emergency efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators quickly learned that the incident stemmed from a dispute over a vehicle. A neighbor had reportedly asked an acquaintance to help her retrieve a car that was parked in the driveway of the Pearl Street residence. This acquaintance, identified as 51-year-old Patrick L. Barkwell from Sugar Creek, Missouri, arrived at the scene and remained in his vehicle. When King approached the driver’s side of Barkwell's car, the situation escalated rapidly. Barkwell allegedly produced a. 22-caliber Ruger revolver and fired a single shot, striking King in the chest. The victim managed to walk back toward the house before collapsing.
Following the shooting, the suspect fled the scene, driving north on Missouri Highway 291. during his flight, he threw the murder weapon into the Missouri River in an attempt to discard evidence. Police tracked Barkwell to his home in Sugar Creek shortly after the incident. When detectives approached him, he reportedly made spontaneous statements expressing regret, calling the event the biggest mistake of his life and claiming he did not intend to kill the victim.
Prosecutors in Jackson County subsequently charged Patrick Barkwell with second-degree murder and armed criminal action. During the investigation, witnesses positively identified Barkwell, and his vehicle matched the description of the one seen leaving the scene. The authorities requested a cash bond of $150,000 as Barkwell awaited legal proceedings for his role in the fatal Thursday night encounter.
