In a tragic turn of events on the evening of October 29, 2023, 30-year-old Mario Anthony Batrez and his 23-year-old brother, Adonis Knight, were shot and killed in a home in Independence, Missouri. The incident, which has deeply affected their family and community, unfolded around 8:30 p.m. at a residence in the 21100 block of East 50th Terrace Drive South.
Responding to a distressing 911 call from the brothers' mother, who reported that her husband had shot her sons, police arrived to find both Mario and Adonis deceased in the kitchen with multiple gunshot wounds.
The suspect was identified at the scene as Terrill S. Anderson, the 40-year-old stepfather of the victims. He was taken into custody and subsequently charged with second-degree murder, voluntary manslaughter, and two counts of armed criminal action. The events leading to the fatal shooting were reportedly captured on surveillance video, which, according to court documents, showed physical altercations between Anderson and the two brothers in the sub-basement and near the garage.
According to the investigation, Anderson retrieved a handgun and fired warning shots into the kitchen ceiling. The situation escalated, and Anderson is alleged to have shot both of his stepsons. Despite Anderson's claim of self-defense, asserting that one of the victims had a knife and the other a gun, surveillance footage indicated that neither brother was armed at the time of the shooting. The video reportedly shows Anderson shooting the men, even firing additional shots as they lay on the floor. Three of Anderson's biological children were in an upstairs bedroom at the time of the incident but did not witness the shootings. Anderson is being held on a $250,000 bond.
The loss of Mario Batrez, a devoted father of two, and his brother Adonis Knight, an accomplished young man, has left their family devastated. Mario was remembered as a dedicated father and a constant presence in his children's lives.
