On April 14, 2018, a violent encounter in Kansas City, Missouri, claimed the life of Larenzo Hudson, a 20-year-old Black male. The incident unfolded around noon near the intersection of 56th Street and South Benton Avenue, where Hudson had driven with a friend to complete the sale of a PlayStation video game. While they sat in their parked vehicle waiting for the transaction, they were approached by three young males.
The situation escalated rapidly when two of the individuals exited
their own vehicle to confront the occupants of Hudson's car. During the encounter, a 15-year-old suspect produced a firearm and fired multiple shots into the vehicle, striking both Hudson and his passenger. The assailants then fled the scene. Emergency responders transported Hudson to a local hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. His friend, who also sustained gunshot wounds, survived the attack.
Following an investigation into the homicide, police identified and arrested the 15-year-old shooter. Due to the suspect's age, his identity was not publicly released, but authorities charged him with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. The case initially proceeded through the juvenile justice system, though Hudson's family publicly advocated for the teenager to be tried as an adult given the severity of the crime.
