The initial account of the shooting came from Jaynia Beans, who was present at the scene and in a relationship with Stevenson. Beans initially told investigators that Stevenson had been banging on her door with a gun in his hand. She claimed that the firearm discharged accidentally as she attempted to take it from him. After the shooting, she reportedly ran to a neighbor's house for help, stating that Stevenson had attacked her and she had shot him.
