On August 11, 2018, eighteen-year-old Balin Thomas Joy was found deceased at his home in Joplin, Missouri. Born in Joplin, Balin had spent a significant portion of his childhood in Pryor and Tulsa, Oklahoma, after being adopted at a young age. He had returned to Joplin in 2017, where he attended Joplin High School. Known among his friends and family for his unique style and creativity, he was an aspiring photographer who enjoyed experimenting with color and smoke in his work.
He was also remembered for his generosity, his love for cooking, and his enjoyment of the outdoors, particularly local trails and wilderness areas.
Following the discovery of his body, local authorities investigated the circumstances surrounding the sudden death. Reports from the Joplin Police Department and subsequent findings by the coroner determined that the cause of death was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The death was officially ruled a suicide. Because the investigation concluded that there was no foul play involved, there were no suspects sought in connection with the case, and no arrests were made.
Balin was survived by his parents, sister, and extended family, who held a memorial service in his honor at a local mortuary shortly after his passing. In the wake of the tragedy, his family directed contributions to suicide prevention organizations, hoping to support others struggling with similar challenges. His name was later added to a national memorial dedicated to victims of gun violence, acknowledging the loss of life.
