In the early morning hours of June 4, 2019, law enforcement officials in St. Louis, Missouri, were alerted to a shooting incident in the Greater Ville neighborhood. Officers responded to the call around 1:30 a.m. and arrived at the intersection of North Newstead Avenue and Elmbank Avenue. Upon securing the scene, they discovered a victim who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite the arrival of emergency responders, the individual was declared deceased at the location due to the severity of the injuries.
The investigation identified the victim as Jazs Johnson, a 35-year-old African American male. Homicide detectives began gathering evidence and interviewing potential witnesses who were present in the area when the violence erupted. Testimony provided to the police suggested that the shooting was not a random act, with accounts placing specific individuals at the scene during the commission of the crime.
Following the collection of witness statements and further investigative work, authorities identified two suspects in connection with the homicide. In July 2019, prosecutors charged 29-year-old Michael Mayhorn and 37-year-old Donnell Cortez Landers with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. Court documents revealed that witnesses had implicated both men, leading to their arrests and subsequent detention without bond as the case proceeded through the legal system.
