In the early morning hours of a cold Saturday in St. Louis, Missouri, a dispute escalated into a fatal encounter that ended the life of 31-year-old Blaine Buchanan. On January 30, 2021, in the Dutchtown neighborhood, an argument broke out between Buchanan and another man. The verbal confrontation, which took place around 4:00 a.m. in the 4700 block of South Grand Boulevard, quickly turned violent.
The altercation became physical, and in the ensuing struggle, a shot was fired, striking
Buchanan. Emergency services were called to the scene, and Buchanan was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to his torso. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Blaine Buchanan succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department officers took a 32-year-old male suspect into custody at the scene. The department's Homicide Division promptly launched an investigation into the incident to piece together the events that led to the deadly confrontation.
