The investigation into the shooting led Kansas City police to a 27-year-old local man. According to court records, witnesses reported that a man approached a vehicle near 84th and Paseo and opened fire, striking multiple people inside, including the shot that proved fatal for Barnes. Surveillance footage from the area captured a suspect in a red baseball cap, a white T-shirt, and red and black sweatpants brandishing a handgun with what appeared to be an extended magazine.
A significant breakthrough in the case came the day after the shooting when detectives were alerted to clothing discovered in the vicinity that matched the description of the suspect's attire from the surveillance video.
