On the afternoon of November 4, 2019, a violent incident unfolded in the residential neighborhood near Brower Street and Grant Avenue in Springfield, Missouri. Police officers were dispatched to the scene just before 5:00 p.m. following reports of gunfire in the area. Upon arrival, they discovered 19-year-old Dearies Hempstead, a Black male, lying outside a home with multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency responders immediately transported him to a local hospital for urgent medical attention, but he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
Investigators quickly turned their attention to identifying the person responsible for the shooting. The following day, authorities announced that 18-year-old Timber Porter had been identified as the suspect. In a development that followed the release of his description to the public, Porter voluntarily surrendered to law enforcement at the Springfield Police Department on Tuesday afternoon.
At the time of his surrender, officials noted that formal criminal charges had not yet been filed against him. Porter's defense attorney publicly stated that the shooting was an act of self-defense, a claim that complicated the immediate legal proceedings. While the investigation continued, public records indicate that the legal process did not result in a widely publicized trial or conviction for the death of Hempstead. Timber Porter passed away in February 2022 at the age of 20, effectively ending any potential for further criminal prosecution in this case.
