On the night of Sunday, November 24, 2019, tragedy struck in the Dutchtown area of St. Louis, Missouri. Victor Gonzalez-Romero, a 30-year-old male, was relaxing inside his truck, listening to music outside his home on the 5200 block of Louisiana Avenue. Around 11:25 p.m., the quiet evening was shattered when he was approached by an armed individual.
During the confrontation, the assailant shot Gonzalez-Romero and subsequently stole his vehicle, leaving him critically injured on the sidewalk near the edge of the Carondelet neighborhood.
When St. Louis Metropolitan Police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Gonzalez-Romero unresponsive with a gunshot wound. Despite the emergency response, he was pronounced dead at the location. The homicide investigation immediately focused on the circumstances of the carjacking, as the victim’s truck had been taken by the perpetrator. Authorities noted that the area had seen a recent rise in violent crime, and homicide detectives began searching for the stolen vehicle and the individuals responsible for the attack.
In the course of the investigation, police identified and apprehended a suspect in connection with the murder. Kai’von De’meze Johnson, who was 18 years old at the time, was taken into custody. Prosecutors from the St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office charged Johnson with second-degree murder, first-degree robbery, and two counts of armed criminal action. At the time of the charges, police indicated that three other potential suspects, believed to be teenagers, were also being sought in relation to the deadly carjacking, though their identities were not immediately released to the public.
The death of Gonzalez-Romero had a profound impact on his family, who had recently moved to St. Louis from California. He left behind a wife, Teresa Garivai, and three young children. In the wake of the shooting, the local community and the St. Cecilia Parish rallied around the grieving family, providing financial assistance for rent, utilities, and the children's education. The case highlighted the ongoing challenges of gun violence in the city, with local statistics at the time showing a significant increase in homicides within the neighborhood where the shooting occurred.
