In the winter of 2019, Antonio Boyd, a 52-year-old man, was fatally shot in north St. Louis. The incident, which also left another 51-year-old man wounded, occurred around 12:10 p.m. on Monday, December 9th, in the 2500 block of W. Palm in the St. Louis Place neighborhood. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered Boyd had already succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the double shooting led authorities to Freeman Whitfield IV, who was identified as an enforcer for a
significant drug trafficking operation. Evidence presented during Whitfield's trial revealed that the drug conspiracy was responsible for distributing cocaine, fentanyl, and heroin brought to the St. Louis area from Houston and Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Prosecutors detailed a motive for the killing, stating that Whitfield had decided to murder Boyd after hearing rumors that Boyd might be cooperating with investigators. Antonio Boyd had been arrested on March 21, 2018, and was known to distribute drugs for Whitfield's supplier and co-conspirator.
In October 2023, a jury found Freeman Whitfield IV guilty of seven felonies, including conspiracy to distribute drugs and causing the death of Antonio Boyd through premeditated murder. During a search of Whitfield's residences, investigators discovered a cache of weapons, including an AK-style pistol and an AR-15-style pistol, thousands of rounds of ammunition, body armor, and 1.2 kilograms of fentanyl. Subsequently, in February 2024, a U.S. District Judge sentenced Whitfield to life in prison plus an additional 10 years.
