In the early morning hours of February 5, 2020, a violent tragedy unfolded in the Downtown West neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri, claiming the life of a young father. 22-year-old Jim Floyd, a Black male, was at the CityView Apartments located in the 100 block of North 17th Street when the incident occurred. Around 12:40 a.m., police officers were dispatched to the complex following reports of gunfire.
Upon arriving at the scene, first responders discovered Floyd suffering from
multiple gunshot wounds. despite emergency efforts, he was pronounced dead at the location. A second victim, a 20-year-old woman, was also found with gunshot injuries. She was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was listed in critical condition. Homicide detectives determined that the shooting likely stemmed from an argument between the victims and an unidentified suspect. As Floyd and the woman attempted to walk away from the dispute to de-escalate the situation, the suspect opened fire on them before fleeing the scene on foot.
At the time of the initial investigation, authorities did not report any immediate arrests or release a description of the suspect. The case remained active with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Division, who urged the public to come forward with information. While another shooting involving a child had occurred at the same apartment complex earlier that year, leading to charges against a different individual, no specific suspect was publicly named or taken into custody in direct connection with Floyd's murder in the immediate aftermath.
Jim Floyd, also known as Jim Lee Floyd III, left behind a grieving family, including his parents, siblings, and a young son. His obituary highlighted a life cut short, remembering him as a beloved family member whose loss was deeply felt by his community in both St. Louis and his reported connections to Illinois and Ohio.
