In the early hours of May 15, 2020, a violent encounter inside a moving vehicle on westbound Interstate 70 near West Florissant Avenue in St. Louis, Missouri, claimed the life of 53-year-old Leonard Ward. The male victim was a passenger in a car being driven by a friend, Edouard Claypool, when a verbal altercation erupted with another passenger, Brian Williams.
The argument escalated with tragic suddenness when Williams, seated in the back, drew a weapon and shot Ward in the head three
times, ending his life. Following the shooting, Williams fled the scene and disposed of the murder weapon as he ran from the police who were responding to the incident. He was later apprehended by law enforcement.
During a recorded interview with police, Brian Williams admitted to killing Leonard Ward. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action. Williams waived his right to a jury trial, and a bench trial was conducted on October 18-19, 2023, before St. Louis Circuit Judge Bryan L. Hettenbach. The primary witness to the murder, Edouard Claypool, refused to testify against Williams and was held in contempt of court.
Despite the witness's refusal to testify, the evidence presented was sufficient for a conviction. On October 19, 2023, Judge Hettenbach found Brian Williams, 59, guilty of second-degree murder and armed criminal action. As a prior and persistent felony offender, Williams faced a sentence of 10 to 30 years in prison. His sentencing was scheduled for December 8, 2023.
