In the summer of 2020, a young woman's life was tragically cut short in the Penrose neighborhood of Saint Louis, Missouri. Carmen Pawnell, a 20-year-old female, was shot and killed on the evening of June 29th. The incident, which unfolded at a residence on Carter Avenue, was the culmination of a domestic dispute that turned deadly. At the center of the investigation was a man with whom Pawnell was romantically involved.
Authorities identified Pawnell's boyfriend, John Albert, as the
primary suspect in her death. According to reports, the couple had been arguing just before the fatal shots were fired. The disagreement, allegedly sparked by a t-shirt found in Albert's car, escalated to a point of no return. In a senseless act of violence, Albert discharged a firearm through the door of the home, striking and killing Pawnell. The tragedy was compounded by the presence of two children inside the residence at the time of the shooting.
In the immediate aftermath, Pawnell's family was left reeling, grappling with their sudden and profound loss. Their grief was mixed with frustration as the man identified by witnesses as the shooter remained at large. The family pleaded with the community for any information that would lead to his capture, as sightings of Albert were being reported throughout the city.
Ultimately, John Albert was apprehended and faced the legal consequences of his actions. He was initially charged with first-degree murder and four other felonies. However, as the case was set to go to trial, a plea agreement was reached. Albert pleaded guilty to the lesser charges of involuntary manslaughter and two counts of child endangerment. In May 2025, he was sentenced to a 10-year prison term for his role in Carmen Pawnell's death, receiving credit for time already served in jail.
