On August 23, 2020, tragedy struck in Kansas City, Missouri, when 23-year-old Jazmyn Henrion was fatally wounded in an early morning shooting. Henrion, a mother of three young children, was a passenger in a private vehicle occupied by several other individuals near the intersection of 68th Street and Cleveland Avenue. Around 3:30 a.m., gunfire erupted, piercing the car and striking Henrion as well as another passenger.
The driver of the vehicle immediately rushed the victims to a nearby hospital in a desperate bid for help, but Henrion succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The second victim survived the attack.
Investigators with the Kansas City Police Department quickly launched an inquiry into the violence, which led to the identification of a suspect. Authorities alleged that a woman named KaShawn Nicola Roper fired the shots into the occupied vehicle that morning. In September 2020, the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office formally charged Roper with second-degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon. Despite the issuance of a warrant for her arrest soon after the incident, Roper evaded immediate capture, prompting a manhunt that would stretch on for years.
Law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and the U.S. Marshals Service, joined the search for Roper, who was described in wanted posters as a Black female standing approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall. Authorities noted she had ties to Missouri, Kansas, and possibly Colorado, where investigators believed she might have fled. Over the following years, rewards were offered for information leading to her arrest, and her image was displayed on digital billboards across the Kansas City area. As of July 2025, KaShawn Roper remained listed as a fugitive, with police continuing to urge anyone with information on her whereabouts to come forward so that Henrion's grieving family might finally see justice.
