On the afternoon of September 22, 2020, authorities in St. Louis County, Missouri, were alerted to a violent incident at Spanish Lake Park. Around 5:00 p.m., police officers responded to reports of gunfire within the public recreational area, located off Spanish Pond Road. Upon their arrival, they discovered a male victim, identified as 31-year-old Thomas Glenn Wiggins, suffering from gunshot wounds. He was found seated inside a truck parked on the premises. Despite the arrival of emergency responders, Wiggins was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation revealed that the shooting was not a random act of violence but the result of an altercation between acquaintances. Witnesses and evidence gathered by detectives indicated that Wiggins had been involved in a verbal dispute with another man at the park. during the course of the argument, the situation escalated when the other individual produced a firearm. The assailant reportedly fired multiple shots, striking Wiggins in the head and chest while he remained in the vehicle. The incident occurred while numerous other park-goers, including families and children, were present in the area using the playgrounds and walking paths.
Two days following the shooting, on September 24, 2020, St. Louis County prosecutors announced the arrest of a suspect in connection with Wiggins' death. Justin Robnett, a 27-year-old man from Kirkwood, Missouri, was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. Law enforcement officials stated that Robnett and Wiggins knew each other prior to the fatal encounter. Following his arrest, Robnett was held without bond as the case proceeded through the legal system.
