In the Mount Pleasant neighborhood of St. Louis, a tragic and fatal encounter unfolded on the night of September 27, 2020. Samuel Reece, a 29-year-old male, was riding his bicycle when he happened upon a Kia Soul. An interaction with the vehicle's occupants quickly escalated, resulting in Reece being fatally shot. The assailants fled the scene, leaving behind a community stunned by the sudden violence. First responders were called to the 4300 block of South Broadway for a shooting but were initially unable to locate a victim.
Shortly thereafter, officers were notified that Reece had been dropped off at a local hospital. The individuals who transported him left before police could interview them. Despite medical efforts, Samuel Reece succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the hospital. The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department's homicide division immediately took charge of the investigation into what became the city's 206th murder of the year.
For more than three years, the case remained under investigation until a significant breakthrough occurred. In December 2023, authorities announced the arrest of 24-year-old James Brown Jr. in connection with Reece's death. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. Court documents revealed that a witness, who was also an occupant of the Kia Soul, came forward and identified the individuals involved in the shooting, naming Brown as one of them.
During questioning, James Brown Jr. initially admitted to driving the Kia Soul but denied being one of the two shooters. Investigators found cartridges from two different firearms at the scene of the crime. Brown later changed his account and confessed to the shooting, though he claimed his intended target was a car. At the time of these charges, Brown was also under investigation for a separate shooting incident that had occurred just days prior, involving the mother of his child.
