On October 19, 2014, 29-year-old Jermaine Jones, an African American male, was fatally shot in the St. Louis, Missouri area, specifically in the suburb of Berkeley. Jones was standing with a group of friends on a street when an unknown gunman approached and opened fire. Jones sustained fatal gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead, while three other men who were with him at the time were wounded but survived the attack.
The incident occurred during a particularly violent weekend in the region, adding to the community's distress.
The tragedy for the family was compounded by a separate but temporally close event involving Jones's older sister, 35-year-old Margaree Dixson. Just hours prior to her brother's death, on the night of October 18, Dixson was found shot to death approximately a half-mile away near the intersection of Lillian Avenue and Plover Avenue in St. Louis. She had suffered multiple gunshot wounds to her head, chest, and arms. Investigators initially treated the two homicides as separate incidents despite the close proximity and short timeframe, struggling to immediately establish a direct link between the motives of the two killings beyond the victims' familial relationship.
Law enforcement officials launched investigations into both shootings, describing the perpetrators in both instances as unidentified males. At the time of the initial reports, no specific suspects had been apprehended, and police appealed to the public for information regarding the gunmen. The family, including the victims' mother Dorothy Dixson, was left to mourn the sudden loss of two children in less than 24 hours, expressing shock and devastation over the senseless violence that had claimed their loved ones.
