On September 28, 2020, a violent tragedy occurred in Portageville, Missouri, claiming the life of 18-year-old Kerigan Danielle Mullins. The young woman, known to friends and family as 'Keri-G' or 'Karebear,' was discovered fatally wounded following a shooting incident in New Madrid County. She had been a student at Portageville High School and was remembered by her community as a vibrant individual who lit up every room she entered.
The investigation revealed that Mullins was in the company of Adam Milburn, who was identified as her boyfriend, at a residence in Portageville. According to statements provided to law enforcement, the pair were situated in Milburn's vehicle at the time of the event. Milburn told authorities he was seated in the driver’s seat while Mullins was leaning her back against his left shoulder.
During this interaction, Milburn discharged a weapon, striking Mullins and causing the injuries that led to her death.
Adam Milburn, who was 22 years old at the time of his sentencing, was arrested and initially faced charges including second-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon. The legal proceedings were moved from New Madrid County to Caruthersville following a change of venue request. In January 2023, just before his case was set to go to trial, Milburn entered a guilty plea to the charge of second-degree murder. As part of the plea agreement, the additional charge of unlawful use of a weapon was dismissed.
In April 2023, Circuit Judge Ed Reeves presided over the sentencing hearing. Despite a request for credit for time served, the judge denied the motion and handed down a sentence of 25 years in the Missouri Department of Corrections. Following the conclusion of the case, Mullins’ family continued to honor her memory, which included opening a store in the heartland dedicated to her legacy.
