Jermaine Spain, a 19-year-old male, was killed in a shooting on November 2, 2020, at Cosmo Park in Columbia, Missouri. The incident unfolded during what was reported to be a marijuana deal that escalated into violence. An exchange of gunfire erupted, and Spain was fatally wounded.
The investigation into the homicide led to the identification of multiple suspects.
One individual, Isaiah Charles Brunson, who was also 19 at the time, was charged with second-degree murder and delivery of a controlled substance. According to court documents, Brunson had arranged to sell marijuana at the park. He sustained a gunshot wound during the shootout and subsequently drove himself to a hospital for treatment, where he was found to be in possession of marijuana. Brunson claimed that the other party involved in the transaction initiated the shooting.
Another suspect, Maurice Banks Jr., then 21, was implicated in the case and faced charges of second-degree murder, first-degree assault, and armed criminal action. After a period of evasion, Banks was apprehended by U.S. Marshals in Las Vegas on May 28, 2022. On March 18, 2024, Banks entered a guilty plea to the amended charges of first-degree involuntary manslaughter and second-degree assault. He received an eight-year prison sentence, with credit for time already served. Evidence presented against him included text messages, witness testimony, and a firearm in his possession that was ballistically matched to shell casings found at the crime scene.
A third individual, who was a juvenile at the time of the incident, was also arrested in connection with Spain's death. This suspect was taken into custody following a high-speed vehicle pursuit. The identity of this individual has not been publicly released due to their status as a minor.
