On November 23, 2020, a tragic sequence of events unfolded in St. Louis, Missouri, claiming the life of Joyce Freeman. The 20-year-old Black female was preparing to take her newborn son, who was just four days old, to a doctor's appointment. She, along with her boyfriend and their infant, entered their vehicle in the 3900 block of Minnesota Avenue, located in the Dutchtown neighborhood. As they prepared to depart, a Nissan Sentra approached the scene.
Occupants from the passing vehicle opened fire on Freeman’s car, prompting her boyfriend to attempt a desperate escape. The assailants pursued them to the 3900 block of South Broadway, where the Nissan reappeared. Two individuals hanging out of the passenger windows continued to discharge firearms at the family's vehicle. Freeman sustained a fatal gunshot wound during the attack, though her boyfriend and the newborn child remained physically unharmed. She was transported to a local hospital where she was subsequently pronounced dead.
The investigation into the homicide led law enforcement to identify and arrest three young men in connection with the shooting. Authorities utilized surveillance footage and witness statements to link the suspects to the crime. Police arrested Steven Noah Washington and Deyontez Huntley, who were both 19 at the time of the incident, as well as Eric J. Williams, who was 17. The motive suggested by Freeman's family in media reports involved a dispute regarding her younger brother's refusal to join a local gang, leading to retaliation against the family.
The legal proceedings resulted in varying outcomes for the accused. Steven Noah Washington faced trial and was found guilty of first-degree murder, assault, and armed criminal action. In late 2022, he received a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Eric J. Williams was also convicted for his role in the killing, found guilty of second-degree murder and related charges. In January 2025, Williams was sentenced to a life term plus an additional 45 years. The third suspect, Deyontez Huntley, stood trial but was acquitted of all charges by a jury in March 2023. During the sentencing hearings, Freeman's family expressed the profound grief of losing a loved one who was known as a caring mother and a mathematics major at Lincoln University.
