In the early hours of January 17, 2021, a night out in Warrensburg, Missouri, turned tragic for Marcus A. Brown Jr., a 22-year-old Black man from Kansas City. Brown, who was attending the “One Ratchet Battle of The Midwest Party” at Bodie's Bar with two friends, became involved in a fatal altercation after leaving the establishment.
As Brown and his companions left the party, they were followed by a group of several men to a nearby parking lot at the corner of Washington and Pine
streets. A confrontation erupted between Brown and the men who had pursued them, and during the course of the fight, one of the individuals shot Brown. In the immediate aftermath, the suspects fled the scene on foot. Brown's friends rushed him to Western Missouri Medical Center for his gunshot wound, but he was pronounced dead shortly after their arrival.
The Warrensburg Police Department launched a homicide investigation into Brown's death. They were assisted by the Rural Major Case Squad, which is comprised of investigators from seven surrounding counties and the Missouri State Highway Patrol, as well as the Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department, as many of the individuals involved were believed to have connections to the Kansas City area. At the time of the initial reports, authorities had not publicly identified any suspects and no arrests had been made in connection with the shooting. The investigation into the death of Marcus Brown remains ongoing as law enforcement continues to seek information from the public.
