In the late hours of February 17, 2021, a violent incident unfolded in the Dutchtown neighborhood of south St. Louis, claiming the life of 22-year-old Lekeyth Gillard. The young Black man was seated inside his vehicle on the 3800 block of Oregon Avenue, near the intersection with Keokuk Street, when he was targeted by gunfire. Around 10:00 p.m., the silence of the night was broken by shots, prompting a 'ShotSpotter' activation that alerted local law enforcement to the discharge of a weapon in the area.
Upon receiving the alert, officers from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department rushed to the scene to investigate. When they arrived, they discovered Gillard inside his car, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. despite the immediate response of emergency services, the injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Homicide detectives subsequently took over the investigation, canvassing the area for potential witnesses and evidence that could shed light on the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
Despite the efforts of investigators to piece together the events of that night, the case has faced significant challenges.
