On the late evening of March 4, 2021, a tragedy unfolded in the quiet community of Florissant, Missouri, claiming the life of six-year-old Black female Kaylee Mae Brooks. The young girl was inside her family's residence on the 4800 block of Lockwig Trail when her mother’s estranged husband, Bobby McCulley III, forcibly entered the home. Investigators determined that McCulley held the family hostage for several hours inside the house before eventually opening fire.
The violent episode resulted in the deaths of Kaylee, her thirteen-year-old brother Kayden Johnson, and their thirty-four-year-old mother, Roseann McCulley.
Law enforcement officers had been called to the area earlier that evening after reports of a suspicious person but were unable to locate anyone at that time. It was not until later that night, following reports of gunshots, that police returned to the scene to discover the three victims deceased. During the attack, the suspect abducted the couple's one-year-old daughter and fled the scene, prompting authorities to issue an AMBER Alert. The toddler was later dropped off unharmed at a relative's home before the manhunt for McCulley intensified. As police closed in on him in the city of St. Louis early the following morning, McCulley died by suicide.
Although the primary suspect took his own life, court records show he faced multiple charges in connection with the triple homicide. Authorities charged Bobby McCulley III with three counts of first-degree murder, three counts of kidnapping, one count of burglary, and seven counts of armed criminal action. In the wake of the investigation, police also arrested a neighbor, fifty-five-year-old Michelle Clayton. She was charged with hindering prosecution of a felony for allegedly misleading investigators about McCulley’s presence in the area prior to the shootings, conduct which authorities believe delayed their ability to intervene. The investigation revealed a history of domestic turmoil, as the children's mother had recently posted on social media about suffering abuse at the hands of her estranged husband just days before the killings occurred.
