Black / African American eighteen-year-old William Kaheim Bellamy was a recent high school graduate with plans for his future when his life was violently cut short in Florissant, Missouri. On the night of June 11, 2021, or the early morning hours of June 12, Bellamy was on the grounds of his alma mater, McCluer North High School, where he had just celebrated his graduation weeks prior.
Reports indicate that gunfire erupted late that Friday night, ending the teenager's life before he could begin his scheduled enrollment at St. Louis Community College for the fall semester.
Police officers responded to the school campus after receiving a call reporting a body found on the property. Upon arrival, authorities discovered Bellamy deceased from apparent gunshot wounds. The investigation quickly determined that the shooting was not a random act of violence but rather the tragic culmination of an ongoing dispute. The individual who placed the call to law enforcement, Aurelius Collier, was present at the scene when officers arrived.
Detectives identified Collier, also eighteen years old, as the primary suspect in the slaying. Further inquiry revealed that Bellamy and Collier had once been close friends since their middle school years, but their relationship had deteriorated over time into a feud that ultimately turned deadly. Following the discovery of the body and the subsequent investigation, police took Collier into custody.
The St. Louis County Prosecutor’s Office charged Aurelius Collier with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with Bellamy's death. Authorities emphasized that this was an isolated incident arising from the personal conflict between the two teenagers and did not represent a broader threat to the school or the surrounding community. Following his arrest, a judge set Collier's bond at $500,000, cash-only, as the legal proceedings began against the young man accused of killing his former friend.
