In the early morning hours of Christmas Eve, December 24, 2023, a violent altercation unfolded at a business located in the 11200 block of West Florissant Avenue in St. Louis County, Missouri. What began as a physical fight inside the establishment involving several individuals eventually spilled out into the parking lot. The dispute escalated rapidly when firearms were drawn, resulting in a shooting that struck three adult males. Police officers from the St.
Louis County Police Department’s North County Precinct responded to the scene at approximately 2:22 a.m., discovering the victims suffering from gunshot wounds.
One of the victims was identified as Kenneth Covington, a 33-year-old male from the 300 block of Crawford Road in St. Louis. He was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries but unfortunately succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced deceased. The other two victims involved in the shooting were also taken to an area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Investigators determined that multiple weapons had been fired during the chaos outside the bar, as evidence collected from the scene indicated the use of at least three different firearms.
Detectives with the St. Louis County Police Department Bureau of Crimes Against Persons led the homicide investigation, which continued for nearly a year. Witnesses reported that the initial fight had started inside the bar before all parties were ejected by security or staff. The violence resumed in the parking lot, where shots were fired shortly after the group exited. Through ballistic evidence and witness statements, authorities were able to link a suspect to the crime. It was discovered that the suspect had been present at the bar and involved in the physical altercation with Covington and another victim prior to the shooting.
On October 31, 2024, the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office issued charges against 31-year-old Jermel Williams of St. Louis. Williams was charged with first-degree murder and two counts of first-degree assault. Law enforcement officials revealed that Williams had been arrested in St. Louis City on an unrelated matter, at which time he was found in possession of two firearms that were ballistically linked to the scene of Covington’s death. Following the issuance of charges, Williams was held on a $1 million cash-only bond as the legal process moved forward.
