In the early morning hours of October 17, 2021, the Baden neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri, became the scene of a deadly shooting that claimed the life of Isis Mahr, a 19-year-old African American woman. The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. near the 8600 block of Goodfellow Boulevard. Mahr was seated in the front passenger seat of a vehicle that had stopped at a red light.
According to investigators, another vehicle pulled up alongside them, and the occupants opened fire, unleashing a barrage of bullets into the car where Mahr and three others were seated.
Emergency responders arrived to find Mahr unresponsive in the vehicle. Despite their efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle and two passengers in the back seat also sustained gunshot wounds but survived the attack. The survivors later told detectives that the shooting began suddenly when the suspects' vehicle pulled up next to them at the intersection. The violence was described by Mahr's family as a senseless mistake, believing she was not the intended target but rather an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire while getting a ride home.
Following an investigation that relied partly on community tips and police work at local gatherings, authorities identified two suspects in connection with the murder. In January 2022, the St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office issued charges against Jalin Jefferson, who was 17 at the time, and Corey Hardy, who was 18. Both teenagers faced counts of first-degree murder, three counts of first-degree assault, and four counts of armed criminal action. Prosecutors alleged that Jefferson and Hardy were the individuals who pulled up to the victims' car and fired the fatal shots. Following their arrests, a judge ordered both defendants to be held without bail.
Before her untimely death, Mahr was known as a dedicated and compassionate young woman with a promising future. She was a 2020 graduate of Cardinal Ritter College Prep, where she had been an athlete playing both soccer and basketball. Committed to serving her community, she worked as a nursing assistant at a senior living facility and had plans to begin nursing school shortly after she was killed. She also spent time mentoring children at the Wohl Community Center. Her death resonated deeply in the area, drawing attention not only for the loss of a bright life but also because she was the cousin of a former state lawmaker.
