In the early hours of a January morning in Saint Louis, Missouri, the life of 31-year-old William Ownes Jr. came to a violent end. On January 29, 2022, Ownes was involved in a robbery in the parking lot of a nightclub. During the commission of the crime, a security guard at the establishment witnessed the events unfolding and opened fire. Ownes was struck in the head by the guard's gunfire and died at the scene. Another individual sustained a leg injury but survived.
When police investigated, they reportedly found stolen jewelry and glasses in Ownes' possession, linking him to the robbery.
The incident set off a chain of events that would lead to more violence later that day. Approximately 12 hours after the fatal shooting of Ownes, St. Louis police officers spotted the vehicle believed to have been used as the getaway car from the nightclub robbery. A pursuit began, which ended in the neighboring city of Ferguson. As the suspects fled the crashed vehicle on foot, a shootout erupted between them and the officers.
In the exchange of gunfire, two police officers were wounded. One officer was shot in the abdomen and was listed in critical condition, while the other was struck in the leg. Another suspect from the initial robbery, identified as 23-year-old Equan Hopson, was killed in the shootout with police. Two other men who were in the vehicle with Hopson were apprehended after a short foot chase.
Following the intense confrontation, charges were filed against the two surviving suspects. August Burns, 23, was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and resisting arrest. Authorities stated that a shotgun fell from where Burns was seated in the vehicle as he fled, and he was wearing an ammunition carrier when arrested. The other man, 35-year-old Clyde Thomas, was charged with resisting arrest.
