On January 5, 1986, 35-year-old Richard "Rich" Alvin Behmlander and his companion, Joseph Knutson, departed from the harbor in Sitka, Alaska, aboard the fishing vessel Camelot. The two men were heading to the fishing grounds just outside of Salisbury Sound. They were expected to return to Sitka on January 9, 1986. When the Camelot failed to reappear as scheduled, a concerned friend of both men alerted the U.S. Coast Guard in Sitka.
