On a warm spring evening in Davenport, Iowa, the life of 16-year-old Jovontia "Jovi" Jones, a Black or African American male, was tragically cut short. On May 19, 2018, Jones was the victim of a drive-by shooting in the parking lot of the Hilltop Liquor Store on Harrison Street. The shots rang out around 6:55 p.m., and though he was rushed to a nearby hospital and later transferred to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, he succumbed to his injuries the following day, May 20, 2018.
Jovontia, a sophomore at Davenport Central High School, was known for his bright smile that could light up any room. Remembered as a joyful and well-loved young man, he was active in track and enjoyed staying physically fit. He was also a hard worker, recently employed at a local Hardee's. His family, who affectionately called him "Jovi Man," described him as a beloved son, brother, and grandson.
In the wake of the shooting, Davenport police quickly determined that the incident was not a random act of violence, but rather that Jones had been specifically targeted. Investigators found the stolen vehicle believed to have been used by the assailants. Despite knowing that several people were in the vehicle from which the shots were fired, the investigation was met with challenges.
A significant hurdle for law enforcement has been the lack of witness cooperation. Although police believe there were people present who saw what happened and knew Jovontia, they have been reluctant to come forward with statements. While investigators have expressed that they have a strong sense of who is responsible for the shooting, no arrests have been publicly announced in connection with the death of Jovontia Jones. The case remains a painful open wound for his family and the Davenport community.
