In the early morning hours of Sunday, August 2, 2015, a dispute in Davenport, Iowa, turned fatal for 28-year-old Gerald Housey, a Black male. The incident unfolded around 6:25 a.m. in the vicinity of 4th and Marquette streets. Following a disturbance, Housey was attempting to leave the area when a man opened fire.
At least three shots were fired from a 9mm handgun, with one striking Housey in the head. He was transported to a local hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The investigation into the shooting led police to identify a suspect in the days that followed.
On Friday, August 7, 2015, authorities arrested 28-year-old Justin McGowan in connection with the death. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder.
