Rescuers discovered Daniel Jones' 13-foot Boston Whaler anchored just offshore from St. Lazaria Island. It's believed the two men left the smaller vessel to continue fishing from Novcaski's larger 17-foot fiberglass boat. However, this larger boat, and the two men aboard it, were never seen again. Search and rescue operations were hampered by dense fog, a common challenge in the Alaskan waters, which shrouded the area and likely concealed any signs of what had transpired. Despite extensive searches by the U.S. Coast Guard and other agencies, no trace of Daniel Novcaski or Daniel Jones was ever found.
