On May 7, 2006, 37-year-old Norman John Fain was aboard the fishing vessel 'Calico Dog' near Priest Rock, approximately 12 miles east of Dutch Harbor, Alaska. He was accompanied by another individual when a sudden series of powerful waves struck the vessel, causing it to capsize. The violent force of the water threw both men into the turbulent sea. While his companion managed to climb onto the overturned hull of the boat and was later rescued, Norman was tragically lost to the waves. At the time of his disappearance, he was wearing two T-shirts, one red and one black, a black fleece sweatshirt under a red fleece sweatshirt, blue or black jeans, and Extra Tuff rubber boots. Immediate and extensive search efforts were launched in the area following the capsizing of the 'Calico Dog'. Despite the thorough searches by rescue teams, no trace of Norman Fain was ever found. The challenging conditions of the Alaskan waters and the suddenness of the event created a perilous situation. The Alaska State Troopers opened a missing person case for Norman, and the circumstances surrounding his disappearance have been documented as an accidental loss at sea. The case of Norman Fain remains a painful memory for his loved ones and the maritime community of Alaska. The unpredictable and often harsh nature of the sea is a constant reality for those who make their living on it, and Norman's story is a somber reminder of the risks involved. Without a recovery, his family has been left without closure. The official investigation concluded that Norman was lost when the 32-foot cod fishing vessel he was on, the Calico Dog, capsized near Priest Rock as it was making its way into Unalaska Bay. His disappearance is one of several maritime losses that occurred in Alaska in 2006, highlighting the dangers faced by fishermen in the region.
