In the summer of 2016, a fishing trip off the coast of Oahu, Hawaii, turned into a heartbreaking mystery with the disappearance of 36-year-old Clint Oshima and his two friends, Jensen Loo and Derek Tomas. On the morning of July 3rd, the three men launched their 20-foot fishing vessel, named 'Iwa,' from the Haleiwa Boat Harbor, embarking on what was expected to be a routine day of fishing.
Friends of the fishermen raised the alarm that evening when the 'Iwa' failed to return as scheduled. The men were last observed battling a fish approximately 25 miles from the harbor, a detail that would become a crucial piece of the subsequent search and rescue efforts.
The United States Coast Guard, alongside the Navy and the Honolulu Fire Department, initiated a comprehensive search for the missing fishermen. The search operation spanned over four days and covered an extensive area of more than 27,000 square miles, stretching nearly 100 miles north of Oahu and extending as far west as Kauai. Hope was initially buoyed by the fact that there were life vests on board the vessel and family members mentioned a large cooler that could have been used as a flotation device. However, the discovery of the overturned 'Iwa' approximately 25 miles off Haleiwa Boat Harbor painted a grim picture of the situation the men had faced. Despite the relentless efforts of the search teams, which included aircraft, cutters, and personal watercraft, there was no sign of Clint Oshima or his companions.
Tragically, the search for the three fishermen came to a devastating conclusion for two of the families. Firefighters recovered two bodies from the waters off the coast of Kauai. Although the bodies were not immediately identified, a life jacket found with one of them was confirmed to be from the 'Iwa'. While the discovery brought a painful closure for the families of Jensen Loo and Derek Tomas, the fate of Clint Oshima remained unknown as he was never found. The extensive search was eventually suspended, leaving his family with unanswered questions.
