In the early morning hours of October 3, 2020, 27-year-old Cassandra "Cassy" Ayon, a Hispanic female, vanished from Unity, Wisconsin. She was last seen at approximately 3:45 a.m. leaving a friend's home. Concern grew when she failed to appear for work on October 5, 2020, and it was discovered that she had not returned to her residence. At the time of her disappearance, Cassandra was driving her black 2015 Chevrolet Impala with distinctive black rims.
She was reportedly wearing a black long-sleeve shirt, blue jeans, and brown boots. The Clark County Sheriff's Office was alerted to a possible missing person on the afternoon of October 4, 2020, sparking an investigation into her sudden and uncharacteristic absence.
The investigation into Cassandra's disappearance soon focused on her ex-boyfriend, Jesus Contreras-Perez. Friends of Cassandra reported that she was being stalked by him and that he had been abusive towards her. Prior to her disappearance, Cassandra had shown someone bruises she claimed were caused by Contreras-Perez. Friends also told investigators that Contreras-Perez had threatened to harm her, even stating he knew where to hide her body so it would never be found. Cell phone location data from the day Cassandra went missing placed Contreras-Perez in the areas where she was believed to be. In May 2021, he was charged with stalking resulting in bodily harm. The following month, more serious charges were brought against him, including first-degree intentional homicide and hiding a corpse.
In June 2022, a jury found Jesus Contreras-Perez guilty of first-degree intentional homicide, hiding a corpse, and stalking causing bodily harm in connection with Cassandra Ayon's disappearance. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in September 2022. Throughout the legal proceedings, Contreras-Perez maintained his innocence. For more than four years, Cassandra's whereabouts remained a painful mystery for her family and friends. A significant breakthrough in the case came on November 30, 2024, when partial remains of a human body were discovered on private property in the Town of Brighton, in Marathon County. These remains were later identified as belonging to Cassandra Ayon. The location where she was found was approximately eight miles from where she was last seen alive.
